Car shopping focuses almost entirely on the purchase price and monthly payment. But depreciation, insurance, fuel, maintenance, and state fees add tens of thousands of dollars over 5 years — and they vary significantly by vehicle type, location, and how you drive. Most buyers don't know these numbers until they're already locked into a decision. CarOutlay brings those numbers forward, so you can compare vehicles and financing options before you sign.

What makes us different

• Full 5-year picture. We model all six cost categories: depreciation, financing interest, fuel or charging, insurance, maintenance, and state fees — not just the monthly payment.
• State-by-state fee data. We tie each state's sales-tax rate, registration fee, property-tax rule, and inspection requirement to its official DMV or revenue department source.
• Plain estimates, clearly labeled. Data we haven't finished verifying is flagged as an estimate and kept out of search. When we're uncertain, we say so.
• Genuinely independent. We don't sell cars, arrange financing, or earn fees from dealers. When we link to a partner it's clearly labeled, and it never influences our estimates or rankings.

We're an independent information publisher — not a dealer, lender, insurer, or financial advisor. Our tools produce estimates based on standard formulas and your inputs; the authoritative numbers always come from your insurer, your lender, your state DMV, and a licensed professional.
